One of the ways of celebrating Christmas this year is to
bake two giant cakes ready to be eaten next Saturday 15th.
December at Largo da Restauração in Olhão.
cakes are the work of chief pastry chef Filipe Martins,
owner of ”Pastelaria Kubidoce” with the support of the
municipality. From 10am on the 15th. December, chef Martins
has decided to offer Christmas delicacies to the people of
Olhão promoting, for all who appear at Largo da
Restauração, the best of what Olhão can make, thereby
animating the city during this Christmas celebration
together with the two cakes measuring about 70 meters and
weighing some 200 kilos.
All can try the
traditional ”Bolo Rei” with its cristalized fruits as
well as chef Martins own version with chocolate, almonds and
cashew nuts, which is bound to prove successful.
Martins will need a team of 20 working for one or two days
to achieve his objective, taking 10 hours just for baking.
He admits that this is something he has always wanted to do,
despite the considerable cost for this time of crisis of
some two thousand euros , which will be supported by Olhão
municipality and ACRAL ( association for commerce for the
region of the Algarve).
Chef Martins, who recently
took an particular interest in chocolate confectionery,
trained with Tiago Faustino resulting in him achieving first
prize as Best Portuguese Chocolatier in 2010 at the
international festival for chocolate in Obidos.
